Abstract This project is based on a by now growing need to limit car traffic and strengthen public traffic in the region of Copenhagen. In that connection the possibilities and the effects of establishing a light rail system in the corridor of Nørrebrogade are examined and it is assesed whether such a project will be an advantageous alternative solution in a future traffic system. First of all the the basic structure itself is examined traffically as well as socioeconomically, and the present plans for new infracture in the area are also examined. Afterwards the physical conditions in the corridor are mapped together with the possibilities of building-in a light rail track in the varying street profiles and with that the resulting consequences for the car traffic. A route is determined from Nørreport by Nørrebrogade, via Nørrebro St., Frederikssundsvej to Herlev and/or Gladsaxe. In the light of the number of potential passengers and corresponding possibilities on this route the placement of stops is determined. From this and with reference to set up assumptions of driving properties a timetable proposal is constructed for the light rail system on the section mentioned in the corridor of Nørrebrogade. The physical changes for the private car traffic are implemented in a car assignment model and calculations are made concerning redistribution of this group of road users. Likewise, the timetable for two scenarios of the light rail system is implemented in a public assignment model and a redistribution plus an increase of the numbers of public passengers is calculated. With these results the costs and benefits of various derived effects are estimated, including core effects as changes in travel time and external effects concerning for example traffic noise. Generally the establishment of a light rail system in the corridor of Nørrebrogade will create limited conditions for the car traffic, but the public traffic achieve evident improvements concerning capacity, travel time and comfort. Moreover the local air pollution and the noise level are reduced remarkably in the corridor itself. Furthermore a simulation of getting traffic through a chosen area in the corridor in a future scenario has been done. With this traffic simulation the building-in of a light rail system in the Nørrevold area is assesed not to be an essential reduction of the existing situation for the car traffic. The problems arisen are assesed to be solved with a more detailed coordination and planning of the signalized crossings. The determination of values of the results from the assignment models and a rough estimate of the construction- and maintenance costs of the project are included in a socioeconomic analysis. In the light of this the project is evaluated not to be profitable during a 30-year-period, but if more socioeconomic effects are included and the project, for example in an alternative form, is put through a more detailed examination, the possibilities for more positive results are considered to be present. The establisment of a light rail system in the region of Copenhagen will open up new possibilities of building more high classed rail lines. Hereby an overall public traffic is system built up, which is effective, quick and covers a large catchment area. At the same time possible future systems with toll or roadpricing are easier to defend and establish.
