Abstract The development of third-order nonlinear glasses is a recent addition to the research activities at Research Center COM. An important part of this research is the ability to measure the nonlinear refractive index. Accordingly, this project has investigated a number of contemporary experimental methods of the characterization of the nonlinear refractive index. Based on this review, the Z-scan method has been selected for timplementation and a Z-scan setup has been constructed at DFM (Danish Fundamental Metrology) Z-scan experiemnts heave been performed on a number of different samples, demonstrating the capabilities and prectical limitatins of this method. However, initially promising results have been found, upon closer analysis, to most likely be due to themal proceses instead. Based on the practical experience obtained here, an approach is described to execute Z-scan experiments with a much-improved ability to measure actual nonlinear parameters in the near future, such improvements including sensitivity and accuracy. Practical preparations have been made to ensure the implementation of these steps.
