Abstract This report is the documentation of the Master project Performance of Ammonia / Hydrogen Mixture in SI Engines. In the recent years there have been increased focus on using Metal Ammine Complexes as storage for Ammonia, which can be decomposed in to Nitrogen and Hydrogen. The focus on theese complexes resulted in the concept of hydrogen pellets, formed by such metal ammine complexes. This project investigates the possibility of using the hydrogen pellets as an energy carrier for the use of ammonia/ hydrogen mixtures as a fuel for the spark ignition engine. A test setup with a CFR spark ignition engine was constructed. A series of experiments with different mixtures of ammonia and hydrogen were conducted. The results from theese experiments shows that in the low speed range of 1000-1200 RPM, mixtures with 10-30 vol% hydrogen showed the best performance with respect to efficiency and power. The results also showed the efficiency of such mixtures to be in the same range as earlier experiments on gasoline. The experimental results were used to evaluate the possibility of constructing a fuel system that utillizes hydrogen pellets as fuel for a SI-engine. This evaluation showed that it is plausable that such a system can be constructed, however it is of big importance how a system like that is made.
Abstract Denne rapport er produktet af eksamensprojektet Ammoniak / brint blandinger som brændstof i gnisttændingsmotorer. Der har de senere år været nogen fokus på brugen af metalsalte til opbevaring af ammoniak, som kan dekomponeres til brint. Dette resulterede i konceptet „brintpiller“. Dette projekt er lavet for at undersøge muligheden for brug af brintpiller til en forbrændingsmotor. En forsøgsopstilling med en CFRgnisttændingsmotor blev lavet. En række forsøg med forskellige blandingsforhold mellem ammoniak og brint er udført. Resultaterne fra disse forsøg, viser at ved det omdrejningsområde på 1000-1200 min−1 der er afprøvet her, er blandinger med 10-30 vol% brint, de mest fordelagtige mht. virkningsgrad og ydelse. Ydermere blev det vist at virkningsgraden på sådanne blandinger er fuldt på højde med resultater fra drift af motoren på benzin. Resultaterne for forsøgene blev brugt til en evaluering af muligheden for at bruge brintpillerne. Denne evaluering viste at det burde være muligt, det er dog ikke lige meget hvordan et sådant system laves.
