Abstract Usability is the keyword in the proof-of-concept access control system presented in this thesis. When designing an access control system the primary goal usually is security. In this thesis a system designed to improve the usability of traditional access control systems will be presented. The intention is to combine an access control system with a smart environment, such that a person only has to authenticate once. By doing this the system should reduce the need for repetitive authentication, when moving through access controlled areas. The prototype will be using a vision-based tracking system based on information from a stationary 3D camera using the Time-of-Flight (TOF) principle. Changes in the images will be detected using a foreground extraction, from which a plan-view (top-view) map will be constructed. It will be shown that the plan-view map is a strong way to distinguish users that are partly occluded. By using blob analysis on this plan-view map a persistent tracking is performed. As the system hereby knows the location of the users, it will be able to maintain the authentication of the users. By combining the knowledge about location and identity the system can make independent access control decisions. We will further evaluate two foreground extraction methods (Mixture of Gaussians and Kernel Density Estimation) with respect to their ability to extract the foreground when using information from a TOF camera.
