Abstract This thesis aims at providing a secure communication framework that solves the problem of secure message exchange on embedded systems in a defined communication architecture. Based on requirements coming from Re-L Teknik ApS a highly-constrained scenario is formulated where a web server and a number of embedded computers can be used to monitor and control places, where Internet links offer limited bandwidth and data transfers are expensive. Implementation of the framework is preceded by analysis of available state of the art solutions which will be used to build and evaluate security models. Unfortunately generic solutions capture too many requirements and involve additional problems which make their application much harder in the used scenario. Thesis shows also that development on embedded systems is a challenging task | limited resources, different computer architecture and necessity of cross-compiling all third-party dependencies involve design trade-os and development issues. Conclusion shows that in generic solutions there is always room for improvement and that proper exploitation of this fact can yield good results and satisfy all project requirements.
