Abstract Females in species of social insects can develop into one of two general castes. A reproductive caste and a caste that is more or less sterile. Until recently it was believed that caste was determined purely by environmental factors during infant development, but studies have documented the presence of a genetic component to caste determination. How this component is maintained without either going to fixation or extinction will be examined using mathematical models.
