Abstract In this thesis the vehicle routing problem with cross-docking (VRPCD) is studied. The VRPCD is the concept of transporting goods from suppliers to customers with intermediate consolidation at the cross-dock. Transportation management aspects of the cross-docking problem are presented and discussed. The solution approaches based on the models byWen et al. (2007) and Lee et al. (2006) are presented and explained. The VRPCD is solved using the metaheuristic simulated annealing (SA). SA uses a neighborhood search to improve the solution of the problem. A construction algorithm and the neighborhood search algorithm is presented. The proposed solution approach is tested on a set of data proposed by Wen et al. (2007) to assess the proposed solution method. From the computational results the desired behavior of the improvement algorithm is seen although the results are not as good as hoped for. The reason for this lack of improvement is believed to be that the neighborhood search is not thorough enough. Thus, possible extensions to the solution approach are presented.
