Abstract This thesis describes a method for automated analysis and feature extraction of mammary gland structures of rats from 2D optical microscopy images of histological slides for evaluation of effects of pesticides and for analysis of gland development. The thesis is a product of project research carried due to a collaboration between Informatics and Mathematical Modelling, DTU department, and the National Food Institute, DTU Food department. The thesis is focused on evaluating the effects of pesticides in mammary glands, for different groups of rats, which are characterized by age and gender, as well as evaluating the growth and development with age. Prior to evaluating the effects of the exposure and the development of the organ, the mammary gland slides are used to implement an automatic method to extract features to the posterior analysis. The extracted features are the area, density and branch and end-points quantity. The result of this thesis is a user-friendly method which will be incorporated in other studies at DTU Food. The developed method shows the lack of effect of the performed experiment, and the develop of the mammary gland across the age and gender.
