Abstract How applications handle persistent data is a key concern in modern business. Performance, security, traceability and time-to-market are all important considerations in selecting a technology for supporting data persistence. In my dissertation I aim to investigate one such emerging technology, IBM pureQuery, and how it compares to established ones, from both business and technical perspectives. The investigation will take the form of a series of case studies, of varying size, inspired by businesses that are utilizing pureQuery. Using these scenarios I will examine how pureQuery performs against some common industry standards. From the business perspective I will consider the impact that pureQuery has on development time, increased productivity and improvements in error handling. I will also discuss the potential benefits offered in terms of licensing and environmental issues. From the technical perspective I will compare and evaluate pureQuery against EJB3 and openJPA and look at the integration of pureQuery with IDEs. I will also consider the benefits provided through the ability to trace SQL calls and the security gains in converting applications to using static SQL. In terms of performance testing I will create a series of stress tests and run these against a dedicated logical partition. Through my findings I will draw conclusions on the value that pureQuery provides to businesses. I will use my results to extrapolate the future direction for the technology and the wider role it may play in the industry.
