Title Simulation of an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle with an Organic Rankine Cycle

Abstract Built on the previous work of Luca Carlassara, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether exchanging the bottom Rankine cycle of a Biomass Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle with an Organic Rankine cycle would improve the electrical efficiency of the cycle. Choice of fluid was a mixture of ammonia and water known as the Kalina cycle when used in a Rankine cycle. Modeling of the mixtures thermodynamic properties was done using the Peng-Robinson’s equation of state. The model was implemented into the software program DNA and accuracy was tested against similar models and experimental data. Finally simulations for various cases were carried out and compared to the existing cycle. Accuracy of the model was generally found to be good, with only minor problems. For the specific cycle setup the Kalina cycle was found to have a lower efficiency than the existing Rankine cycle. Primary reasons included the profile of the heat source pressure levels.
