||Different studies regarding tribology in punching have been conducted using a test method developed at the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Management at the Technical University of Denmark in connection with a Danish industrial research program on Development and testing of environmentally friendly lubricants for punching and blanking of stainless steel sheets. Due to the direct relation existing between development of pick-up on the punch stem and backstroke force during the withdrawal of the punch, the mentioned test allows investigating tribological conditions in punching by backstroke force measurements. Different liquid and solid film lubricants have been tested to rank their lubricating performance in punching and investigate the type of lubricating mechanism actuating. At the same time, new strategies for enhancing lubrication in this severe sheet metal forming process have been thought, developed and tested. Results have shown that tribological conditions in the punching process can be affected to a significant degree by modifying parameters like punch topography, type of lubricant / lubricating mechanism actuating, process speed, punch geometry and punch coating.
