Abstract Abstract

The aim of the project is to investigate whether it would be possible for the Danish IT company, Tabulex, to expand into the UK education market with their Timetabling program, Scheduler. Initial research resulted in UK secondary schools being identified as the best possible market for Tabulex, as it was found that the functions in Scheduler would not suit primary schools and universities.
Information about the UK education market and potential customers was gathered through the use of qualitative in-depth interviews and quantitative e-survey questionnaires.

In order to determine whether or not Tabulex should expand into the UK education market, internal and external aspects were investigated which showed that the UK and Denmark are quite similar, in many ways. The investigation used a number of different and accepted analytical tools including Porters’ Five Forces, PESTLE, Hofstede’s and Hall’s cultural aspects and SWOT/TOWS analysis. A benchmarking profile was also made, comparing Scheduler and the current market leader in the UK, Nova-T6, to clarify where Scheduler should improve in order to gain greater success on the UK education market.

The results suggested that there would appear to be great potential for Tabulex to expand into the UK education market. The critical first recommended step would be to find a small number of customers, who could assist Tabulex in the beginning to adapt and improve Scheduler to better meet the needs of the UK education market. Once this has been achieved, it is suggested that careful marketing and advertising and the establishment of effective support mechanisms should enable Tabulex to become a leader in the UK education market.
