Abstract This report is about harvesting the maximum energy from a solar panel into a battery for use in a consumer product – in this case a solar powered radio. The “Perturb & Observe” algorithm is pro-grammed in software and is controlling a switch-mode power supply to increase the power into the battery. The software algorithm makes the system able to gain about 25 % more power from the sun, compared to a system without power point tracking – and about 50-60 % more than a system without charge controller.

As the system has to power a “Solar Radio”, it is designed to be portable, i.e. the main focus is to minimize standby power consumption and increase power from the solar panel. The battery used for this project is a 2 cell Lithium Ion with a nominal voltage of 7.4 V, and the solar panel consists of poly crystalline cells and has an open circuit voltage of 19.6 V.
