Title Optimizing the Brunata Smart Metering Sensor Network Backbone

Abstract The thesis conducts a cost-effectiveness analysis of the current Brunata smart metering sensor network
backbone. The aim of the project is to theorize and prototype a wireless alternative to the current
RS485 based Brunata smart metering network backbone. The proposed alternative is to supersede the
current architecture´s functionalities in all aspects whilst deployment and maintenance costs are to be
reduced to the furthest extent possible. The deployed system´s lifecycle is to reach 20 years and the
prototype is not to jeopardize this goal in any way. The proposed solution is a wireless mesh network
of transceivers, made up of application specific repeater nodes, running a custom wireless protocol. A
sophisticated gate, running embedded Linux, complements the system and provides advanced remote
monitoring and administrative functionalities. While the transceiver nodes were designed from scratch,
including the radio frontend, the gate was built using a customized development board. Although the
system is fully capable of fulfilling its purpose as a prototype and it provides solutions to several
complex problems, it reveals several issues to be addressed in the final design.
