|Abstract||This report regards the solutions in accordance with the forthcoming EU Directives and Ecodesign requirements, which means that there will be a need for a revision of energy consumption of vacuum cleaners and how to solve this problem.
The rapport focuses on solving the problem by re-design the nozzle to reduce energy consumption, and to make an IT tool that will help the company find the best combination of nozzle and motor.
After the desk research was complete, we started building our first prototype for concept testing. It was based on an idea that by forcing an airstream down into the carpet the dust would be easier to remove. The experiment gave better results without the pressured air stream than with it, therefore this experiment was not pursued further.
The above mentioned tests led to the idea of pulsating flow, in which holes between the two channels in the nozzle would create increased dust-pickup as the air changes direction through the carpet hairs. This concept was abandoned when the test results did not support the claim.
Results and calculations for all the above mentioned tests can be found in the report and on the CD.
As these ideas were rejected a functional IT tool was created instead, this tool will help the company when trying to achieve a good energy label. This program is attached.
Economy calculations show the potential of the developed IT tool in the form of energy savings for the consumer as well as a savings in material cost for company.
