|Abstract||This report will aim to describe and act as documentation for the detailing phases of Derek Acheampongs end of year engineering design and industrial innovation mechanical engineering bachelor project 2011.
The purpose was to through research and reverse engineering study the folding bicycle with particular respect to the frame, frame geometry and design, material selection & manufacturing. In doing so the aim was to identify the current leading folding bike, study its strengths and weakness in an attempt to re-design it based on the findings.
The overall general requirement for the design would be to develop a frame which would be relatively easy to use with regards to the design specification, folding alignment and one befitting the use as an inner city commuting folding bike for the user.
The aim and objectives for this project was not to come up with a breath taking, market breaking designed folding bike. The focus was on the development of the bicycle frame and the materials from which it can be manufactured. Thus making the aim and objective, to study the folding bike and based on the research and study findings derive logical, calculated and innovative additions or subtractions to the current design and make.
Given that all other components could be taken off the shelf as standard parts, there have only been brief references and mentions about the other components in a folding bike.
The development of the said folding bike is highly influenced by the design of the bicycle therefore the features which will be scrutinized in detail would be material selection and justification, material processing and justification, social and cultural milieu.
In order to achieve the above stated aim, a product design specification for the bicycle frame would be made and based on this immediate elimination of materials which does not satisfy the required properties will be carried out.
