Abstract Main objective for this project is to investigate possibilities of noise reduction for Nilfisk C120.5 high-pressure washer by means of active noise control. Noise in this machine comes predominantly from the pulsations in pressured water, which can be traced back to the motion of the pistons in the hydraulic pump. Different noise reduction approaches are discussed and active noise control is found to be the proper solution to successful suppression of the low frequency noise. Sound power level tests, as well as pressure pulsation tests are made in order to locate the dominant low frequency noise and reveal amplitude of pressure pulsations which are responsible for this audible noise. Presented model for solution of the problem is based on excitation of high pressure water hose wall, thus creating a pressure pulsation of opposite phase in the water. Different types of actuators are discussed and decision upon best suitable actuator is made. Simplified model for estimated interaction between hose and proposed piezoelectric actuator is presented, and calculations show that actuator is capable of producing adequate pressure perturbation in the water inside the hose.
